Because the shape of Florida is so much more recognizable to the viewer.

The motives of the characters are ALWAYS subject to making the audience
aware of the plot. The recognizable geography made it immediately clear
that Earth was the target of the attack. Most other targets on Earth
would have made it necessary to identify the target with dialog or a
sub-title.
